Safe Heating
In colder weather, people spend more time inside their homes using fireplaces, furnaces, and heaters to keep warm. There's nothing quite as cozy as a fire, but it presents some safety hazards. To stay safe AND warm this year, keep these tips in mind.Chimney and flue maintenance is important. Prevent buildup of flammable soot and creosote, and make sure your chimney is clear of flammable debris like bird nests, by having your chimney regularly cleaned. Keep fire in its proper place by using a fireplace screen to prevent sparks and ash from entering the room. Store and season your firewood properly for safe, clean burning. Invest in a covered, metal ash disposal container and always store all ash safely away from combustibles. Never, ever leave a burning fire unattended, and make sure a fire in a fireplace is completely out before going to bed.
